Portishead the Band
Portishead is an alternative indie band that originates from Bristol that despite its best efforts to stay in the underground music scene exploded onto the national British and American scene in 1994 with the release of their album Dummy. The band’s ecliptic sound can best be described as the dark indie tones that could easily be featured in some of the best indie films of the nineties like Donnie Darko or Virgin Suicides. After garnishing worldwide recognition on the national rock scene and a place in the top 500 albums of all time Portishead withdrew back into the studio to record.
Today, Portishead has maintained its loyal cult following in America and continued to break into the top ten in the UK over a ten year span. The most recent release by the band was Third which spawned the first full live performance by the band in over ten years and several additional appearances in some of the largest musical festivals of 2008 including the Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona and Coachella in the United States. Portishead is still together presently with its founding members who are Beth Gibbons, Adrian Utley, and Geoff Barrow.
